Student groups at Georgetown and North Myrtle Beach high schools are continuing traditions of helping families in their areas have a brighter Christmas. Students at the two schools are examples of teens throughout the area who are raising money and buying presents and food for holiday baskets.
For five years, English teacher Cathy Threatt has activated the Christmas Angels Club at North Myrtle Beach High School. This year, 19 students in the club have adopted 40 angels from Salvation Army "Angel Trees." Threatt says the students, their parents and friends in the community have raised "about $85 a child, to adopt angels and provide them a Christmas that they otherwise would not have." An estimated 50 students, parents and community helpers will meet to eat at 4:30 p.m. Friday "and then we will be off to shop." Threatt says the group of holiday helpers will include former North Myrtle Beach students now attending college. The number of angels adopted this year and the money raised are about the same as other years, she says. "The students do it all."
At Georgetown High School, English teacher Sharon Gordon (in her 37th year of teaching, bless her heart) says students in the National Honor Society chapter have raised enough money to adopt two families for Christmas gifts. The chapter has done this for about six years, Gordon says. A family is selected, typically with some connection to the school. Students work from a wish list from the families and will have a "wrapfest" Dec. 17. Gordon is one of two advisers for the 19 chapter members. The Georgetown High School Student Council is raising money to purchase holiday food baskets for four families. The 11 students on the council have collection jars and have raised money in their neighborhoods, sponsor Allison Doshas reports. The students are "right on target to raise $200," she says. Fundraising will continue until Dec. 15 and the food baskets will be delivered Dec. 18.
From Brunswick County, N.C., to Georgetown, students are demonstrating a sprit of giving that goes with them to college and through life.
